Now you might be wondering: Should I get a spray for my event? How do I know I’ll choose the right place? What if I look crazy? What even IS a spray tan? Don’t worry babe, you’ve come to the right place. We’re gonna cover it ALL.

Spray tanning is a much healthier and less time-consuming alternative to bed tanning.

Instead of being fried by UV light, the skin is tanned via a safe sugar derivative called DHA. The spray solution is applied by a qualified spray tan artist through an air pressure spray gun.

You are usually in and out the door within 20 minutes. Yes, it’s pretty quick and painless!

Unlike bed tanning which requires multiple visits over many weeks to achieve desired color, spray tanning is a one-and-done process.

Solution color is customized to your skin’s undertones and your desired darkness level (at least…it SHOULD be customized if you’re going to a good place–more on that on the next page).

Okay I’m intrigued…how long does it last? What’s the fading process like?

Most spray tans only last about 5-7 days. However at The Glow Dr, we pride ourselves on using the most premium and long lasting solution lines. The use of these solutions, as well as our commitment to client education on how to take care of their tan means your color can last a whopping 10-14 days!

It’s important to understand that just because color lasts 10-14 days, doesn’t mean that it is the exact same color all of those days and that on day 15 you suddenly wake up with no color at all. Our skin cells turn over over time–not all at once. Sprays are at their darkest the first 2 days and then generally begin to lighten with every shower, meaning that your color will be significantly lighter the first week than it is the second. On day 10-14, you’ll want to use a mitt to exfoliate off any remaining color that’s hanging on.

Note that the face and neck fade faster than the rest of the body. This is a universal occurrence for all spray tans. This is due to a higher skin cell turnover rate on the face and neck, extensive skincare routines that strip color, taking makeup off, and general exposure to the elements for this part of the body. Luckily we do carry a facial tanning mist that will catch your face right up to the rest of your body once it fades. This is one of our most popular products. Ask about it at your appointment!

I think I’m gonna book. What’s the appointment process?

All of our booking is done online via our website. Once you book, you’ll be sent a list of detailed prep instructions, which are also always posted on our website. We’ll cover these in more detail later in this guide.

Be sure to choose loose dark clothes to wear to your appointment, as well as a loose pair of sandals or slippers. Tight bras, jeans, tennis shoes, and leggings can all mess with the tan if you put them on immediately after spraying. Also remember to have no makeup, deodorant, lotion, or perfume applied for your spray as these can interfere with the tan sticking to your skin.

Pro tip: If you’re coming to your appointment straight from work and have makeup and deodorant on, simply ask your artists for some wipes to get it off before we spray you!

Upon arriving at our luxury salon in Brookfield, you’ll be greeted by one of our expert spray artists (who doubles as your new bestie). We’ll offer you some complimentary water, coffee (yes, we have iced), or champagne, and promptly walk you back to your spray room to get started!

The Process

Then, we’ll get to know you and your skin a little bit

We’ll start with your new client consultation, where we basically ask you a bunch of questions and examine your wrist veins in order to determine the appropriate solution base, undertones, and darkness level that best fits your skin type and preferences.

Next we’ll instruct you as to how to apply our barrier cream to your hands and feet, and have you undress. Most of our clients prefer to avoid tan lines and spray completely naked–which we encourage! We promise it’s not weird. We spray clients all day of every shape, size, age, and color. This is a completely judgment free zone! So no apologizing for your body is allowed. We are honored that you are trusting us with a vulnerable process. Some clients do prefer tan lines so they will wear underwear or a bikini–which is totally fine as well! We also provide disposable thongs to wear upon request if preferred. However if you choose to wear your own garments, rest assured that the spray will completely wash out of them in the wash so they will not be ruined.

Now, it’s time to spray

We’ll help you put a hair net on and have you hop on the spray mat. The spray process itself takes less than 5 minutes, as we tell you what we’re doing the whole time. No surprises here! Our spray rooms come equipped with state-of-the-art extraction units so you can easily keep your eyes open, breathe naturally, and even talk throughout the spray process. It’s just a bit chilly!

While applying the finishing touches to your color, we’ll go over all post tan care info and give you the lowdown on what to expect. This info is also all promptly texted to you after your appointment so you don’t need to worry about memorizing anything we say.

If you look in the mirror immediately after your spray, you’ll likely look a little crazy. Not to worry! This is a natural and very temporary part of the process. Once you rinse off later, all that dark color will wash off in the shower water, leaving only perfectly natural color behind for you to enjoy!

All done! We’ll have you get dressed and meet you up front for any final questions and checkout. Most of our clients are in and out of the salon within only 20 minutes.

Note that with all spray tans, you have a certain amount of time that you must stay dry in order for the color to develop, so make sure to take that into account when making plans for that day. Our salon offers 2 convenient options: rapid and standard/overnight. Rapids are rinsed off in 2-6 hours depending on your preferred darkness level. Standards/overnights are rinsed off in no less than 10 hours but no more than 16 hours, giving you lots of flexibility. Both these options are customizable, high quality, and the same price! We will discuss your preferred shower time during your initial consultation.

We totally understand that standing naked (or almost naked, whichever you prefer) in front of a stranger can sound a bit intimidating. But not to worry! This is what we hear constantly from our new clients:

Ok so why should I trust YOU with my first spray?

Ah…our favorite question! We know how important it is for you to look your best. We know how stressful it can be to choose the right beauty providers. Not all spray tan are created equal. Your spray tan color MUST be customized to your skin tone and preferences. Luckily at The Glow Dr–we do all that and more.

Every new client here receives an extensive color consultation where we discuss the timing and location of your event (yes location does matter), past history and results from sunless tanning, your skin type and moisture level, your skin undertones (using wrist vein color coding method), your desired darkness level, and any small customizations you may prefer. We then mix up your personal concoction of our SIXTEEN solution shades to give you a color that’s so natural that you can’t tell the difference from getting an old fashioned sun tan.

Your spray is then applied by one of our expert artists, who are trained to evenly cover every curve of your beautiful self. A complimentary rolling treatment and finishing powder is applied for ultimate tan longevity and comfort. Nails, hands, wrists, feet, and ankles are meticulously wiped and blended to ensure there are ZERO giveaways that this is a spray ;)

And all of this is done with a complimentary champagne glass in hand!

Won’t the color rub off on my clothes?

After you take your first rinse, there is no color transfer on to clothing! We can be confident about this because contrary to ‘uneducated’ belief, spray tans are actually a skin reaction through DHA (the sugar ingredient) rather than a dye that sits on top of the skin. After you take your first rinse, there’s nothing to transfer! Rest assured your clothes will stay unharmed.

As for the clothes you wear right after your spray before you rinse off, color will come out immediately in the wash. We recommend wearing dark clothes to your spray appointment to avoid seeing any color on clothing.

Following all proper prep instructions & aftercare instructions is absolutely essential for maintaining long-lasting color and even fade. Your skin is the first thing people notice about you! Save yourself the headache and don’t cut any corners for this one. Follow these to a T.

I hesitate to use the word need for anything that we’re trying to sell you on, but in the spirit of not cutting corners to risk less-than-perfect results–you may want to listen to this one.

The spray tan solutions we use are the most expensive and top-of-the-line solutions on the market, which is great! But it means that they don’t play very well with drugstore body washes and lotions.

Here’s why: the list of cosmetic ingredients that will screw up your tan is honestly endless... the synthetic oils, sulfates, fragrances, you name it. And they’re in almost every drug store body wash and lotion you can find. Use of these products will result in a tan that develops with blotches or streaks and fades quickly. Did you spend your hard earned money on this tan just to mess it up with Gold Bond? I don’t think so babe....

Our Lather Me Up body wash and Butter Me Up body butter won’t do you dirty like this. With a THICK pudding consistency and sugar cookie scent, plus organic shea butter and argan oil for deep moisture, you’ll be glowing from head to toe while taking out some much needed insurance on your spray investment.
